When installing an outdoor heater in your patio, mounting it from the ceiling is an ideal solution. This method provides flexibility as there are a variety of different ceiling mounting poles and our technicians can easily install your heater. There are several considerations for ceiling-mounted outdoor patio heaters. We will guide you through them.
What Are the Benefits of Ceiling-Mounting My Heater?
There are several benefits of ceiling-mounted heaters. These benefits depend on the environment and the specifics of your outdoor patio. Ceiling-mounted heaters do not restrict thoroughfare and create a blanket cover of heat.
Ceiling- vs Wall-Mounted
Ceiling-mounted heaters and wall-mounted heaters are both considered efficient heating solutions. Choosing one over the other depends on the outdoor space. Wall-mounted heaters work well in low ceiling areas or spaces with ceilings and provide targeted heat. Ceiling-mounted heaters on the other hand are not restricted by ceiling height and can heat the whole space effectively.
Ceiling-Mounted vs Portable Heaters
Portable heaters are most effective in large, open areas where targeted heat might be required but less effective in smaller covered spaces where ceiling-mounted heaters would be a better fit. Pool areas or large, open terraces could benefit from portable heaters. During the warm day portable heaters can be stowed away and only brought out at night so you can continue to enjoy the outdoor area.
What Are the Top 5 Considerations When Ceiling-mounting Your Outdoor Heaters?
Before choosing to ceiling-mount your heater, these are the top 5 considerations you need to keep in mind.
- The height at which a heater can provide the most effective heat while being installed at safe distances from possible risks, is one of the main considerations. The optimal height, both for electric heaters and gas heaters, is generally eight to nine feet from the floor.
- If the ceiling height is above the average nine feet, we provide a range of ceiling poles to ensure your heater meets the proper height requirements.
- Clearance between electric heater and ceiling should be between 200mm to 300mm, depending on the specific model. Gas heaters need to be suspended with a clearance of 350mm which can be achieved by adding a heat deflector. Carefully read the installation manuals and review the clearance requirements.
- Before a ceiling-mounted heater can be installed, the ceiling itself must be assessed to ensure it can carry the weight of the heaters and that there is a secure surface where the heater can be mounted. Electric heaters generally between 16lb and 22lb and gas heaters can weigh between 33lb and 44lb.
- Ceiling-mounted heaters should not be installed within three feet of combustible items such as umbrellas, curtains, awnings, fans and lights to prevent them from burning. Installation should always be done by a licensed professional.
Considerations Flush-Mounted Heaters
It is also possible to flush-mount electric heaters directly into the ceiling. The main consideration for flush-mounting devices is the ceiling cavity clearance. Depending on the model, the clearance must be between 7.1” and 10” for the Platinum Electric Recess Kit and 21.1” for the Tungsten Electric Recess Kit.
